BRIEFING

Youth income support in Australia

Released in June 2013, this issue of Face the Facts looks at income support for young people in Australia.

This briefing considers the impact of employment insecurity, financial insecurity and complex access and compliance arrangements on Australians aged 16 to 24 who rely on the Newstart Allowance or the Youth Allowance.

It brings together the research and views of a wide range of organisations with an interest in the wellbeing of young people who require financial assistance while studying or looking for work. It also incorporates material relevant to the needs of vulnerable young individuals who must find a way to house, feed and clothe themselves while meeting Centrelink compliance requirements associated with longer periods of unemployment.
