The conference will continue to examine the common ground between Eating Disorders and Obesity which are becoming more prevalent in Australia and require urgent attention. It will cover assessment, prevention, treatment and recovery.
According to NEDC Eating disorders are estimated to affect approximately 9% of the population, Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa affect between 2% and 4% of the population and Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS) may account for up to an additional 5% of the population and Up to 20% of females may have undiagnosed eating disorders. The impact of Eating Disorders will have major health policy and societal impacts too according to North side Clinic eating disorders are affect approximately 500,000 Australians each year.
Obesity Policy Coalition says that studies show that between 1985 and 1997 the combined rate of overweight and obesity in Australia doubled and obesity among young Australians (7–15 years) trebled. Currently one in three Australian adults and one in four Australian children are overweight and obese.
The Conference will explore contemporary best practice, multidisciplinary care and research into the epidemiology, clinical manifestations and treatments relating to eating disorders and obesity. It will bring together clinical practitioners, mental health experts and public health administrators and academics from Australia, New Zealand, the USA and South East Asia.
