Australia’s first-ever national multicultural youth summit, FUSE, was held in Sydney in October 2014. The Multicultural Youth Advocacy Network (MYAN) has recently published a follow-up report on this landmark event.

The FUSE summit was attended by 40 young Australians aged 19–25 from refugee/asylum-seeking and migrant backgrounds, giving these young leaders the opportunity to ‘build skills, network and engage in advocacy with decision-makers’.

The 24-page report gives an overview of the three-day FUSE summit, highlights outcomes for participants and lists recommendations for promoting the outcomes of the event, and for enhancing future events.

Recommendations include developing strategies for policy and advocacy work based on summit participants’ suggestions; providing opportunities for FUSE delegates to apply their skills in a range of settings; facilitating ongoing communication between FUSE delegates and MYAN; and investigating the possibility of hosting state- and territory-based FUSE events, as well as regular national events.
