SPA National Suicide Prevention Conference: Connecting Pathways - Big Country, Big Picture
|
Adelaide, Australia
02 Nov 2006 |
|
02 Nov 2006 to 05 November 2006
Adelaide
Australia
The new look program will focus on key themes:
Stream 1: How will current research inform future practice in suicide prevention and intervention?
Stream 2: Age, gender, social and economic disadvantage, culture and mental health have all been the focus for research and practice. What are the commonalities and what are the differences, which need to be understood to advance the efforts in suicide prevention and intervention?
Stream 3: How are the lessons that can be learned from those with lived experience and those bereaved by suicide able to be used to better understand and reduce the risk of suicide?
Stream 4: There are some traditional barriers between those engaged in service delivery and those involved in research. What recent initiatives are crossing these boundaries to generate better partnerships and outcomes? And how can institutions, the private sector and community be better engaged and involved in meeting this challenge?
Stream 5: Much is said about best practice and evidence based knowledge. What are the criteria by which such labels can be applied and how much evidence is enough?

4th National Suicide Prevention Symposium 'Understanding Suicidal Behaviour: Update your Knowledge and Practice'
|
Dunedin, New Zealand
28 Nov 2006 |
|
28 Nov 2006 to 29 November 2006
Dunedin
New Zealand
Each year the symposium has a different theme to give those working in the suicide prevention sector the opportunity to meet and discuss an aspect of the very broad and wide-ranging field of suicide prevention.
This year's theme is reflected in the Goal 3 of the 2006 New Zealand Suicide Prevention Strategy: To improve the care of people who make non-fatal suicide attempts
Suicide attempt behaviour and deliberate self-harm are important health issues in that they represent considerable emotional distress in people's lives and there is ‘’research evidence that amongst those making non-fatal suicide attempts approximately 50 percent will make at least one further suicide attempt with one in 10 ultimately dying by suicide.’ (New Zealand Suicide Prevention Strategy pg 25)
The symposium aims to provide opportunities to share the latest knowledge and practice in this challenging field. Those working in suicide prevention and related sectors are strongly encouraged to attend to update themselves and to make and renew their networks with others engaging in similar work across New Zealand.

Women and Depression Conference
|
Sydney, Australia
23 May 2007 |
|
23 May 2007 to 25 May 2007
Sydney
Australia
This conference explores the challenges of depression in relation to women. The approach is multifaceted, to reflect both the diversity of women, and the complexity of depression per se. But it contains an underlying and unifying theme which is rarely acknowledged either in biomedical discourse or popular debate:
Depression is always influenced by social and political dimensions. While not reducible to socio-political factors, depression cannot be seen in "personal" terms alone.
